Blueprint under construction: India look to solve 2027 World Cup bowling puzzle in New Zealand ODI series

India have a fair idea of what their ideal ODI bowling attack should look like. What remains uncertain is who, beyond the established names, will fill the remaining pieces of the puzzle.Jasprit Bumrah remains India’s undisputed spearhead, while Mohammed Siraj is the closest thing to a settled second seamer. Beyond that, however, the pecking order is far from finalised. Arshdeep Singh‘s left-arm variety has made him a proven force in T20Is, but he is still relatively untested in the 50-over format. Gurnoor Brar is only beginning to find his feet, while India’s search for a reliable pace-bowling all-rounder capable of easing the dependence on Hardik Pandya remains unresolved. That is why the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning in Auckland on Wednesday, carries significance far beyond a routine bilateral contest. With the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa now less than a year away, India are running out of opportunities to answer some critical questions about their bowling resources. The absence of Bumrah and Pandya from the tour has already shifted greater responsibility onto a young attack. The blow was compounded by Prasidh Krishna’s hamstring injury, ruling out a bowler widely viewed as a near-certain World Cup pick, especially given the fact that he is a tall, hit-the-deck bowler, the kind that does well on pitches in South Africa.Siraj, with 51 ODIs behind him, becomes the senior figure in the pace unit. Around him are bowlers rich in promise but short on experience. Arshdeep has played just 18 ODIs, Gurnoor only nine, while Auqib Nabi and Anshul Kamboj are still trying to establish themselves at the international level.Head coach Gautam Gambhir was unusually frank when he described the group as potentially India’s “most inexperienced ODI bowling attack”. His assessment also underscored the importance of the assignment. If India prosper in New Zealand, it will be because this attack has risen to the challenge in conditions not traditionally in India’s comfort zone.Beyond evaluating individuals, India must identify specialists for every phase of an ODI innings: new-ball operators, middle-overs enforcers, bowlers who can bowl dry and death-bowling finishers. Equally important is finding combinations that can succeed in conditions similar to those expected in South Africa. And when one talks about weaknesses, the seam-bowling all-rounder question springs up. Nitish Kumar Reddy has emerged as a possible backup to Hardik and in the T20Is, one saw him bowl the difficult overs and bowl with increased pace and effectiveness, but with only eight ODIs and limited evidence of his effectiveness as a fifth bowling option, he remains a work in progress. He will also be featuring in only the first ODI as India are looking to play him in the Test matches. The batting unit, though, gives greater comfort and offers greater certainty. Questions around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future have gradually given way to discussions on how best to maximise their experience. Shubman Gill, meanwhile, has an opportunity to strengthen his credentials as ODI captain, leading in the first three matches before Shreyas Iyer takes charge for the final two as Gill prepares for Tests. For India, this tour is less about immediate results and more about gaining much-needed clarity. The World Cup blueprint is taking shape. The bowlers now have five matches to prove they belong in it.“If we do well in the One-day series, the credit will go to this bowling attack. It will go to these boys. When you come overseas, your bowlers win the series, especially in One-day and Test cricket,” Gambhir stressed.India have three ODIs against Sri Lanka in Dec and another three against Zimbabwe in Jan. But those games are in Indian conditions which are vastly different from South Africa. If the team has to identify weaknesses and address them, it has to be here, in New Zealand.

Will the absence of Bumrah and Pandya affect India’s performance in the ODI series?
