Elon Musk's Grok releases first AI-generated 'The Odyssey' episode as Christopher Nolan's film ends theatrical run with USD 1.8 billion haul

Months after Elon Musk promised to make a ‘historically accurate’, AI-generated adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic ‘The Odyssey’, with Grok Imagine, a seven-minute episode of the series has been released on X.The company shared the first clip of the AI-generated project that also credits Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. The release comes amid Musk’s repeated criticism of Christopher Nolan’s film ‘The Odyssey’, which officially concluded its box office run, with an estimated global haul of USD 1.8 billion. The film drew significant criticism from Musk, particularly for its casting of Elliot Page as Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Musk had alleged that Nolan cast the actors because “He wants the awards,” he said, referring to the Academy’s representation and inclusion standards for Oscar eligibility. In July, Musk announced that Grok Imagine would create a full-length adaptation of Homer’s epic before the end of the year. Sharing an AI-generated three-minute trailer. He wrote, “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”Musk’s announcement drew criticism from filmmaker Scott Derrickson, known for directing ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘The Black Phone’. Addressing Musk directly on X, Derrickson wrote, “Clearly @elonmusk doesn’t know s**t about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s,” adding, “His opinions on art are worthless.”With awards season drawing close, Nolan’s adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ is emerging as a major contender for Best Picture and several other top honours at the 2027 Academy Awards. The film is widely tipped to be a frontrunner in the Best Picture Oscar race, while Nolan is also considered a strong contender for Best Director. Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway are rumoured to be in the running for nominations in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, respectively.
